" She explained how intragenerational conflicts between members of the family grew out of discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Laws that created different rights between descendents born in China and those born in America. She also makes a heartfelt case that time eventually heals wounds and that many members of the family who were in conflict and their descendents have reconciled. She hopes that in the end all members of the extended family will one day be able to reunite in recognition of their common roots in the struggles of their ancestors to make a new life here in America.

Here is an open letter to all members of our extended family that I wrote 14 years ago when I first started writing this blog and it remains very timely with respect to my Auntie's new book and her wonderful talk.

https://juejoeclan.blogspot.com/2010/06/open-letter-to-all-members-of-jue-joe.html

Here is a the video recording of Auntie Soo Yin's talk.

jjuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07960807215145734076noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581230122476881763.post-43925220460439917102023-12-12T18:50:00.000-08:002023-12-15T15:06:33.109-08:00Photos to Accompany Asparagus Opera Book
Recently my Auntie Soo Yin and I collaborated on a new book. Details are in this post:

Asparagus Opera-A Chinese Family in the San Fernando Valley

Although Auntie Soo Yin moves back and forth in time in narrating our family's story, in this photo essay I have started the story with Jue Joe's emigration to America in 1874 through San Tong Jue's death in 1987 in chronological order . The pictures are meant to help the reader follow visually the narrative in our book.

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; It is based on an unpublished memoir that she wrote over 20 years ago and includes new information and research from the blog. Although a work of non fiction , my Auntie's beautiful and lyrical writing style gives the book the feel of a novel.

Here is a description of the book

Asparagus Opera is a heartfelt memoir of a multigenerational Chinese farming family that spans the late 19th century to the 20th centuy and follows the family as the story moves from China , to the Napa Valley in California , to Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, and then to Mexico. It is narrated by Soo Yin Jue whose grandfather emigrated to America from Guandong province in China in 1874 and follows his life story as well as the story of her father who was born in China and emigrated to America at age 13 in 1918. It is also a lyrical and moving portrait of the memories of a young girl growing up on an active busy, multi ethnic, family asparagus farm in the San Fernando Valley and her search for understanding the sources of inter and intragenerational conflict and drama in her family.

Here is my editor's afterword from the book:

My Auntie Soo-Yin is the youngest of my father’s sisters. She and I are only eight
years apart in age but a generation apart in our respective roles in our family’s story.
More than twenty years ago my aunt gave her nieces and nephews the gift of a long
sprawling unedited first draft of the story of our family . The story captivated me then
and has continued to hold me in its spell all these years. I began researching and
contributing more detail to our family’s story in America and created an internet blog
where I collected oral history, photos, poetry, art, film clips and documents from other
members of our extended clan. It has always been my
dream to work with my Auntie Soo Yin and to bring her heartfelt memoir of our family to
a wider audience. She is a wonderful and gifted storyteller with a unique voice and we have spent many hours writing and talking about the details of the story you have just
read. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I.

Jack Jue Jr. 2023

Here is the Amazon link to our book. The most significant clue was Auntie Soo Yin remembering that her father San Tong told her that Jue Joe arrived in San Francisco in February of 1874.
Robert Wells was able to determine that there were only two steamships arriving in San Francisco from Hong Kong that month. One was a smaller but more modern steel hulled screw propelled steamship which only had room for 22 steerage passengers and the other the much larger all wooden paddle wheel propelled SS Japan. with room for 590 Chinese steerage passengers. Jue Joe had always told the family that he sailed from Hong Kong aboard an enormous ship with a large complement of Chinese passengers and that he served as a cabin boy on that ship . For these reasons Auntie Soo Yin and I believe that the SS Japan was the ship that Jue Joe arrived on .

It is fascinating that Robert Well's book is an in depth exploration of that very ship , the SS Japan, the largest paddlewheel steamer of it's time and a marvel of 19th century engineering . Unfortunately, later the very same year that Jue Joe arrived on that ship , the SS Japan was lost at sea off the coast of China in a late night coal fire with loss of life of 390 Chinese steerage passengers returning to China from America.

Here is a picture of the SS Japan .

Here is a picture of the berthing section for the Chinese Steerage passengers who were stacked three bunks high in the forward part of the ship .

Here is a picture of a Chinese cabin boy (steward) serving first class passengers in the dining salon . This is exactly the work that Jue Joe did. There were 30 Chinese cabin boys on the SS Japan. They wore black caps, all had black pig-tails that went down to their heels, dark blue tunics, large wide trousers, gaiters or white stockings, and black felt shoes with white soles. They served "22 guests in a large cabin , fluttering round them and serving them in the most respectful fashion, without making any noise".

Here is a talk that Robert Wells gave on the Pacific Mail Steamships, their role in Chinese Emigration to America, and the tragic loss of the SS Japan . It is a 25 minute talk on the Jue Joe Ranch. I enjoyed touring the Valley Relics Museum and meeting Franky Ortega who is a local high school teacher who helped Auntie Soo Yin and I on our previous zoom talks on the Jue Joe Ranch for the Museum of the San Fernando Valley. Also joining me for the event were my sister Adrienne and her husband William and my cousin Jimmy and his wife Nancy.

jjuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07960807215145734076noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581230122476881763.post-25165874495288499322023-02-01T15:15:00.004-08:002023-02-01T15:46:07.581-08:00"Chinese in Napa Valley"- a talk by author John McCormick with Jack Jue Jr.
I had the pleasure of joining John McCormick in a discussion of his new book "Chinese in Napa Valley- The Forgotten Community that Built Wine Country". John and I met when he was doing research for his book and discovered this blog. He was excited to find Jue Joe's oral history of his time as a vineyard worker in the Napa Valley and has included Jue Joe's story in his book as well as used Jue Joe's life story to illustrate various larger themes throughout his book . Here is the You tube video of John and I discussing his book and Jue Joe's life story at the Napa County Historical society event on January 19th, 2023. The presentation was live with some 70+ folks in attendance as well as 30 more folks who attended on zoom.

jjuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07960807215145734076noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581230122476881763.post-44435422917596818962021-07-15T20:55:00.018-07:002022-01-11T16:42:47.315-08:00"A Jue Trilogy" by Auntie Soo YinFrom Auntie Soo Yin: "This was my 'pandemic project' while sheltering-in-place for a whole year 😀! This completes the removal of all the historic structures on the ranch property. Our family is saddened by this news but are happy that the stories, memories, and pictures live on.

San Tong was my grandfather . He was the son of Jue Joe and born in China , emigrated to America at the age of 13 with his mother and brother to join Jue Joe in Los Angeles. He ran asparagus farming and produce operations for Jue Joe and after Jue Joe passed away ran all farming operations for the Jue family and then moved to Mexico in the later part of his life before returning to America to retire.

Here is her presentation.

For those unable to attend here is the you tube video of my talk.

One of the fascinating stories in the Jue Joe saga is his friendship with Otto Brant.
How does a poor illiterate Chinese man who is a houseboy on a wheat ranch, meet up with and become fast friends with a wealthy Title insurance president? There is ample documentation in real estate deeds and family oral history that Otto and Jue Joe were associates and friends but why or how that friendship developed is something I did not understand. My talk concerns the research I have done and some of the answers about that very special and unusual friendship. jjuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07960807215145734076noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581230122476881763.post-31130772728513340592020-09-01T17:23:00.008-07:002020-09-01T20:26:02.313-07:00Museum of the San Fernando Valley Presentation on Jue Joe Ranch
Recently, Franky Ortega, a high school history teacher and local historian has developed a series of Zoom presentations on the Jue Joe Ranch for the Museum of the San Fernando Valley. In the later years he spent his life in La Paz . The extended family visited him there . The attached pictures were from that visit. I am really sad that I was not able to visit him then .

From my Auntie Soo Yin :

"The machine is a tea-bag making machine. The machine produced about 1,200 or 1,800 tea bags per day , not sure which number but at least 1,200 The man standing to the right of the machine is "Arturo"who was San Tong's business partner in the company. The machine was used to bag Damiana Tea which comes from the Damiana plant that is used in health supplements and that grows wild in the outskirts of La Paz, Baja California.

San Tong was way ahead of his time in introducing this product because today's health food stores now carry Damiana based products such as tea extracts, and other health products that contain some form of the plant. The commercial hen cage systems my dad was making were selling well, and more little Zorasters were on the way. So dad bought a big lot around the corner on Woodley, and mom met with a local contractor. He (I don't remember his name) had just built your house. He had mom tour your then new house, which she did (she knew your family, probably from both Van Nuys and UCLA).
Mom brought back ideas from your house, and the contractor drew up plans and a budget. Dad thought the plans were fine, but not the cost. So things got cut - specifically the fireplace. Which I remember mom complaining about. Since the family grew to four boys, all who went through a pyromaniac phase, it was probably a blessing.
One of the photos shows one of you standing in front of house with everything covered with snow. We have a similiar picture, of me and my cousin, in our front yard. with everything covered in snow. It was during the winter of 1948-49, and I think it was the first time my dad had ever seen snow.
Best of everything to you all,
Dave Zoraster
It would have been very sentimental if we could have captured more of life as it was then. However, I wanted to share this selection of photos further back in time and in particular, showing background landscape of what the land and structures looked like then. So scan the photos for those details too. Starting in chronological order that Diane sent the photos (it was easier for her to send them as she kindly put all my album photos into digital form to preserve them).
3. Joan and her dog, with I and Pingy out in field nearer De Celis . You see the back of area where Pa Pa and Ma Ma Kurihara lived. They built a hot tub shed there too. There used to be a pigeon coop at the back of that shed. Then to the left would be the big chicken coop where we would daily collect eggs
4. I am holding the one bike that we all shared. This photo was taken on the black asphalt area between the side door of main house (going into kitchen) and the pass thru driveway part of the packing house on the right. To the left of pass through is the regular paved driveway heading onto dirt towards the gas pump. Further to the left of the driveway under the tree is the notorious two field crate stacked up beehive where some young kid of one of the workers threw rocks at, creating a huge swarm of bees that were stinging horses, and people on farm. We were all still living in the ivy covered old house (main house not built yet), I remembered Joan running into the house screaming because of bees in her hair and she dunked her hair into sink full of water! It was quite awful and horrible. No one could go outside for a long time. That beehive stayed at that same location and we gave it great reverence, plus there was another big beehive at the Vanowen St. side of the ivy house where Jack grew gourds and there were rotating vegetable gardens there. Bees were necessary for pollination and I got plenty of stings.
5.. Guy's horse, Senator. He was old and had a sway back. He's a gentle horse unlike Jack's strong-willed stallion. Joan's horse ran away with me when I was atop her and she yelled, "Head towards the haystack. She'll stop and eat." I was saved.
8. Bingo. Who can forget Bingo, the mascot of the Ranch? Very smart dog who guarded his territory and his family. The one thing he hated the most....baths! He also managed to chase away the feral cats and left us with litters of kittens every spring, which we parceled out among us. Thus I became a life long lover of cats.
9. Soo-Yin and Pingy on front lawn facing East. Background is field, later corral, then morphed into tennis courts. That shed you see in right background next to Vanowen St. is pump house with a round block of wood plugging a well. When farm was active, a worker lived in there and used that block of wood as a table. One year, a small plane crashed into a tree on side of Vanowen, right adjacent to the Pump House around 8:00 A.M. Very loud noise so we all ran out to see and of course, that worker ran out too, not hurt but frightened.

That's the stories connected to these pictures. Hope they help round out your images of life when we grew up there. Activities that I wish were photographed, but never were: Jack milking the cow twice a day and my cat routinely going by to get squirted in face for lick of fresh milk. Us using butter churn to make our own butter during WW2. Having fun in the packing house after hours making roller coaster rides with field boxes sliding across the rollers from one end of packing house to the other. Building forts and look out towers with bales of hay. Guy and I running down the field to Victory to wave to the conductors as the train went by. Selling fruits from our trees in our kids' Stand on Vanowen and De Celis, putting the ripe fruits on top, greener ones on bottom. Coyotes howling at night and sometimes roaming around coops, chicken creating ruckus. All the animals that we've had on the farm: Horses, cattle, chicken, duck, pheasant, pigeons, dogs, cats, goat, pigs, white mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, canary. Ending with a tidbit. When I was teaching first grade and students studying curr. of Cows/Milk, I asked my students if they've ever been to a farm. They said, "Oh yes, we've been to the Pumpkin Patch!"

Here is a photo of my Auntie Joan and my cousins Bob and Jeni at the front door to the Ranch House circa 1962. The Chinese character on the door is "Fook" in Cantonese or "Fu" in Mandarin meaning good luck or good fortune.
From Auntie Soo-Yin "The word "fook" means "good fortune," according to Ah Gung (San Tong). He asked grandmother Leong Shee to choose a word to bless our new home, which was meant to be our family's permanent headquarters. Leong Shee chose fook (Fu in Mandarin).
My father explained to me that the most respected elder in a family has the honor of blessing a new home."
From my cousin,Ming, "The word is “fook” 福, which means happiness, fortune or blessing. It is also part of Jimmy’s Chinese name. You may notice a discrepancy between the left-most strokes on the left between the character on the email and on the door. According to Betty, the door uses “classical” strokes, while the character in the email is Chinese traditional."

Workers report that the historic redwood packing shed and barn from the original Jue Joe Ranch will go first and then the ranch house that my grandfather built. The buildings and the stories will live on in our collective memories.
"I came upon this poem in my old files. It’s one I wrote 30 years ago based on stories my mom told me about her growing up with your dad at the ranch. You’ll recognize that it actually combines her stories with some of my memories of the ranch house which didn’t exist during their childhood, e.g., the moss by the front door, the steps and the door mat on the side of the house. (Remember that closet next to the door where Ah Gung kept his hats?)"

THE RANCH
- for my mother and uncle

With a walnut branch
we coax a black horse to the fence.
Together, we climb on its wide back
and watch the sun fall
beyond the far eucalyptus.

The slivers of beef
and asparagus from father's fields
are on the stove, and as we make our way home
we leave low-hanging motes of dust
then climb three steps
and pause before entering, to rattle
our shoes on the steel mat beside the door.

The table is set in grey.
We set ourselves in the black chairs
and cool our throats with milk
from a silver pitcher.

*
At night the house is silent
except for father
coughing into a bag in the kitchen.

Outside,
we pinch the light from stars
and watch the moon rise in the east
out of Asia.

From the door of a packing shed
Mexican songs and lantern light scatter
across the glimmering fields.

Later,
I step through the cold and tender moss
by our front door.

There,
a good woman-our grandmother-
draws me near and whispers good night
before I climb on the moon's yellow light
into feather comforters where I cry
and try to remember
the face of our mother.jjuehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07960807215145734076noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8581230122476881763.post-89346099127309776712018-12-14T10:00:00.000-08:002020-04-02T09:34:00.741-07:00Auntie Soo Yin's Talk at Daniel Pearl Magnet School Recently my Auntie Soo Yin was invited by Franky Ortega, a teacher at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, to give a talk about the history of the Joe Joe Ranch to his classes."Daniel Pearl Magnet High School is a magnet school within the Los Angeles Unified School District in Lake Balboa, Los Angeles, near Van Nuys, in the San Fernando Valley. It is the smallest comprehensive high school in LAUSD ". It is located adjacent to Birmingham high school of which Auntie Soo Yin is an alumnus herself. The site of the Jue Joe Van Nuys ranch is located very close to the school within walking distance.

Here is Auntie Soo Yin's description of her talk.
"It was an honor to bring the Jue Joe story to Franky's students. I spoke to two different history classes of Franky's, the third and fourth periods, and each time the kids were very engaged and asked me good questions. They found our family's transnational story fascinating. The talk addressed birthright citizenship, exclusion laws, emigration and separation of families, culture clash, colorful characters and historical figures that graced the ranch, and the San Fernando Valley's historical ranch culture. They loved your Saugus video!! It made the points that I covered come alive for them because they could see how asparagus farming was actually done! When the video showed women sorting and grading asparagus shoots on a moving conveyor belt in the Packinghouse, one student exclaimed it was just like watching "I Love Lucy," in which Lucy is working in a chocolate factory! Students commented that our family's past legal and social challenges were very relevant to important issues that this country is embroiled in today. Also, they were delighted to learn that Ritchie Valens had lived briefly on the Jue Joe Ranch! When I asked for a show of hands if anyone knew of Ritchie who'd died before their time. All the students raised their hands! They knew every song that he had recorded too. Moreover, the kids were excited to learn that I was an alumnus of Birmingham. They asked me what was it like attending the School back then, and were the teachers good or bad, lol!"

As part of her presentation she showed an edited video I made of the film of the Jue family Saugus farming operation that was created by my late father, Jack Sr. and late Uncle Harry.
Here are my Auntie Soo Yin's photos of the grave site and the headstone. Rosemary's headstone is the fourth large upright headstone to the right of the tree.
I am very sorry I never met my grandmother.

We sometimes forget she was a thoroughly modern young Chinese American woman born and raised in the United States. Here is an excerpt of her letter to San Tong who was farming with his father in the Imperial valley while she was pregnant with my dad who she calls "Ah Yit"

Dearest Husband,
Am writing a few lines to know how you are getting along . Are you working hard, and do you miss me very much? I sure miss you , Honey Boy!! We thought perhaps you were coming back for Thanksgiving Day . Sam phoned the nite before saying that he would bring a turkey and a couple of chickens out the following day. So we did have Turkey, dressing , potatoes, chicken, Birds nest soup and Roast pork. It was good ! Oh, how I wished you were here to eat it with us !! It didn't taste near as good as it would have if you were with us too.!

Gee, I'd like to bring you folks some Turkey, cause I'd know you'd like it! But just think of the distance, 150 miles to go and 150 miles back. I'd like to take the train but the distance I'd have to walk !!! Oh Baby! when are you coming back to " Ah Yit" and me ? You've been gone five whole days already!! Sometimes I get so lonesome I cry.

I went up town and got myself a hat. I hope you like it . I got it down at Bullock's . I got Ma a hat for her birthday. I told her " I'm going to spend $5 on you anyway ,so you might as well choose what you like, before I buy something you don't care for !! So she chose a hat. I bought Dad a wool shirt for $4. I brought the clock to fix and they're going to charge me $1.50 for fixing it . I'm going to buy $5 of yarn to knit a blanket. After I buy that , I'll sure be broke!
Isn't it funny how fast money goes?

Mother wants to know how Father is and if he is any better. Please give him my regards.
Mother hasn't been so well either, backache, headache , heartache and etc. I told her to let me bring her to the doctors' but she says the doctor doesn't do much good anyway. Sometimes she's alright but at other times she doesn't feel good at all. Just like me! Sometimes I'm alright but gee, sometimes my back hurts me terrible, also my tummy feels so heavy. I guess it's " Ah Yit". Gee! I'd be glad if I was all through with him !! Wouldn't that be nice? Close now and please write soon ! How much longer are you going to stay , Honey? Here are all my love and kisses.

My cousin Bob wrote a moving poem about Rose that I will include below:

Coming to This Life-after reading letters from my grandmother, Rose Evelyn Chung (1908-1935)

I dreamed that you lived 'til now.

In my garden, I see you
thumbing dark soil into your palm,
......sensing
the sandiness of your life transforming
......into this shared dream of nasturtiums, and
......hollyhocks,and delphinium; a garden

bright with dreams you deferred to your daughter,
......and she to me,
..............and me to my daughter.

In your time , you smelled a breeze
.......just like this,
tasted the fruit of dates from Indio and hungered
for sugar cane as sweet as these. And yet,

how strange it is to be alive. ......now
beneath this elm. Purple finches chattering above
like school children-like my children -who in
their love for books

can only glimpse the lives to come.

But we have come to our lives-mine,
a single history in an archipelago of poems;
yours

an archive of letters to your husband, bringing
him
back to you .........and you...
